How to apply

Course aims

The Master of Public Health aims to develop public health capacity through public health education through:

  • the provision of a multi-disciplinary Master of Public Health degree by public health specialisation coursework and minor thesis or project
  • ensuring that graduates have a broad-based understanding of the determinants of health in populations
  • contributing to the development and vigour of the greater public health community
  • equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain and improve existing health promoting environments
  • the training, retraining and up-skilling of health professionals to meet public health workforce needs
  • carrying out research to identify public health priorities and generating initiatives for policy and action
  • developing strategies to equip graduates to ensure equity in the health system and interventions to promote the health of disadvantaged groups
  • developing understanding of health issues and contribute to the improvement of public health research capability worldwide
  • instilling in students the rigorous standards required for excellence in research, and
  • creating an environment which will attract and retain quality teaching and research staff.

Structure

MPH Part I and II

The core MPH units are taught to the students of the four universities together at a common location. Each contributing University teaches two units in the common Part I. Students take these units as part of their first full-time year equivalent and then progress to study a specialised stream (Part II) at their home university.

Monash University

  • Part I: 3 core + 3 elective units
  • Part II:
    • 6 units / 4 units + minor
    • project / 2 units + major
    • project (research stream)

Deakin University

  • Part I (5 units)
  • Part II (7 units)
  • Option A includes a 2 unit research project
  • Option B includes a 4 unit research project

La Trobe University

  • Part I (4-8 Units)
  • Part II (8 units) Research
    • Research Mode (including a 3 unit thesis)
    • Practice Mode (including a 2 unit action learning project)

The University of Melbourne

  • Part I (a minimum of 4 VCPH Units including Statistics and Epidemiology)
  • Part II (10 units) and a 2 unit research project

How to apply

Australian Resident Students

Applicants normally have an undergraduate degree and field experience in public health or a related area. Selection is based on additional criteria including a written statement outlining reasons for undertaking the course and a demonstrated involvement in professional activities related to public health.

Application requirements vary between Consortium institutions. For further details and an application form please contact the course coordinator at the university you are interested in. Closing dates for applications also vary but are towards the end of November.

International students

The Victorian Consortium for Public Health welcomes international students. Selection into the program will be based on a consideration of qualifications, experience in public health, professional involvement, and a personal statement outlining the reasons for applying. The English Language requirement is IELTS - minimum score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.5 or equivalent .

Application requirements for international students vary between the four universities in the Consortium. As well as fulfilling the general requirements above, students need to meet the specific entry requirements of the university they apply to.
